What's Happening in Music Class?

Pre-K: Students are learning to explore their voices through singing and speaking. They are working on developing the concept of “bubble” (personal) space through movement activities.

Kindergarten: Students are continuing the process of vocal exploration, discovering their singing, speaking, whispering, and shouting voice. They are working on steady beat-keeping through singing and movement activities. Songs about cars, trains, animals, and storybook characters are favorites in kindergarten.

1st Grade: Students are expanding their vocal range in singing, along with learning to read and notate music for the first time. Steady-beat keeping is an ongoing skill. Students are preparing for their first encounter with mallet instruments. We love to dance in 1st grade music!

2nd Grade: Students are continuing to expand their vocal range in singing and are beginning to master steady beat-keeping. Students are reviewing basic rhythmic and melodic patterns found in music to be read and notated. They are also reviewing proper technique while playing mallet instruments. Dancing is one of our favorite activities in 2nd grade music!

3rd Grade: Students are preparing to play the recorder for the first time by learning the note names for the treble clef. They are reviewing basic rhythms found in beginning recorder music, as well. Dancing is a continued favorite in 3rd grade music!

4th Grade: Students are dusting off their recorders for their second year of playing. They are reviewing the note names for the treble clef, along with more complex rhythms found in recorder music. Dancing is a “must-have” in 4th grade music!

5th Grade: Students are preparing to play their recorders for a third year. They are learning an expanded range of note names for the treble clef and even more complex rhythms found in recorder music. Dancing is still a favorite in 5th grade music!

6th Grade: Students are beginning weekly drills and exercises in music theory. They are preparing to travel back in time through U.S. history, learning how music of the time period relates to well-known historical events in the United States.

7th Grade: Students are continuing weekly drills and exercises in music theory. They are preparing to take a trip around the world, discovering the music and cultures of various countries.

8th Grade: Students are in their final stages of weekly drills and exercises in music theory. They are preparing to take a road trip around the United States, discovering the origins of popular musical genres in the country.
